A recent flurry of awards suggests the outside world recognizes the company’s commitment to these core values, too.
For example, in November, Black Enterprise
included Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) on its latest list of the 50 “Best Companies for Diversity.” The publication cited multiple reasons for this designation, such as:
Fifty Best -- Regional Engagement Manager Dana Green accepts Black Enterprise's "Best Companies for Diversity" award on behalf of Toyota.
- TMNA’s spending of more than $1 billion with African-American suppliers as a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable.
- An annual Diversity & Inclusion Assessment that holds executives accountable for the effectiveness of such initiatives.
- A survey designed to gauge the state-of-the-work culture and environment in terms of respect and treatment of team members.
- Management’s support of the African-American Collaborative, a business partnering group that – among other activities – mentors and supports team members to help prepare them for advancement opportunities.
Mia Phillips exemplifies this commitment. The national manager of cross carline/brand advertising was among the industry professionals honored at the Multicultural Media Luncheon during the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January. The event has grown to 10 sponsors and 223 participants this year from one sponsor and 100 attendees in 2011.
Similarly, this month, Black Enterprise
cast its spotlight on Sandra Phillips Rogers, adding TMNA’s general counsel and chief legal officer to its list of the “Most Powerful Women in Business.”
Top Seller -- The Lexus IS was honored as the best-selling luxury vehicle among Hispanic Americans by the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers.
And given that Toyota’s people give rise to its products, it should come as no surprise that seven of its vehicles claimed Diversity Volume Leadership Awards as selected by the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD). Top performers, based on the 2016 calendar year results, included:
- Toyota RAV4 – Ethnic volume sales leader in the NAMAD’s New England region
- Toyota Corolla – Ethnic volume sales leader in the NAMAD’s Southwest region and best-selling vehicle among Hispanic Americans
- Lexus RX – Best-selling luxury vehicle among women and Asian-Pacific Islanders
- Lexus IS – Best-selling luxury vehicle among Hispanic Americans
- Lexus NX – Volume growth leader among Asian-Pacific Islanders
Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations, and Cooper Ericksen, vice president of Lexus marketing, accepted the awards on the company’s behalf during a ceremony in the run up to the NAIAS.
