Can a full-size premium luxury sedan also take on the persona of a sports coupe? Lexus, with the unveiling of its 2018 LS 500 F SPORT at the New York International Auto Show, says yes.
In Lexus lingo, the F models in the product lineup are track-tuned maximum performance machines. The F SPORT iterations, meanwhile, imbue the standard models with a more engaging look and feel while still emphasizing exceptional comfort.
The LS 500 F SPORT pushes the boundaries of this concept on all fronts.
All of the LS Goodness
The newest addition to the LS line begins where its siblings, introduced in Detroit in January, leave off. That includes Lexus’ premium global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA-L) platform that contributes to enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness.
LS 500 F SPORT customers can also choose between two new drivetrains: an all-new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and the latest version of Lexus’ hybrid system. Gas-powered models come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
And, among other features, it incorporates Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, advanced chassis control technology that has been continuously refined since it made its debut more than a decade ago.
Plus a Whole Lot More
But the F SPORT goes several steps further with multiple modifications inside and out.
Heading this list is a carefully retuned chassis that promotes a more engaging driving spirit. In a similar performance vein, this special LS also includes:
- Exclusive F SPORT 20-inch wheels
- Exclusive F SPORT summer tires (all season tires for all-wheel drive model)
- 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brakes
- A Handling Package available on the rear-drive gas model only that includes Variable Gear Ratio Steering, Active Rear Steering, Active Stabilizer and a sport-tuned suspension with rapid height function
Other variations on the core model help ensure the F SPORT not only feels more sporty (as the name implies) but also looks the part. Most noticeable is the F SPORT front grille that took computer-aided design operators some five months to achieve. Unique rocker panel, trunk moldings and badging add to the exterior aesthetic. And it will be offered in Ultra White, an exclusive F SPORT exterior color.
On the inside, you’ll find impressive F SPORT cues, such as:
- Exclusive Circuit Red interior color
- Perforated-grill pattern on seating surfaces
- Embossed headrests
- Unique aluminum trim elements
- Aluminum accelerator pedal, brake pedal and footrest
- Perforated shift handle
- Ultrasuede headliner and seat inserts
- LFA-inspired speedometer and tachometer
The net effect of these and other features? A new twist on omotenashi
, the concept of Japanese hospitality that served as the design inspiration for this all-new fifth generation LS. As applied to the core LS 500, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them. The F SPORT starts there and adds a performance attitude to the mix.
